A Back-to-School Healthcare Checklist

Posted by SFSH on August 22, 2019

About 56.6 million students will attend school in the United States this fall, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. That’s a lot of kids… and a lot of germs. Schools should be a place of education and personal growth. Unfortunately, physical injuries or sickness can hinder a child’s path to success.

Make sure your child is fully prepared to start his or her school year with this checklist.

Vaccination Station

Staying up-to-date on vaccinations should be everyone’s number one priority before starting school. All children entering a South Dakota school district are required to have these vaccines.

  • Diphtheria, Pertussi & Tetnus vaccine (At least 4 doses)
  • Poliovirus vaccine (At least 4 doses)
  • Measles, Mumps, & Rubella vaccine, or MMRV (2 doses)
  • Varicella vaccine (2 doses)
  • Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines are required upon entering 6th grade

The Hib, Hepatitis A & B, HPV, Influenza, and Pneumococcal vaccines are highly recommended as well. Preventable diseases like measles, mumps, and whooping cough are still a threat even today. Make sure your child is vaccinated.

Get Fit with a Physical

Physicals are beneficial for numerous reasons. It gives physicians the opportunity to speak with you about your child’s current health issues, such as any allergies, nutritional concerns, or diseases. Your physician can also identify concerns and tips to avoid future problems. Certain school activities may require physicals before starting school, but it’s recommended that all students take them, nonetheless.

Other Concerns

With school starting, children may begin to notice trouble with their eyesight. Be sure to schedule an eye exam for your child. This is also a good time to schedule dental checkups.  Another reminder is to have medical history records and contact information readily available in case of an emergency. Provide your school nurses with updated health information and check in with them for any additional recommendations.

Have a Happy School Year

The beginning of school can be an exciting yet stressful time. This checklist is a good guideline for anyone to follow before school starts. Calm your concerns and reach out to Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital Urgent Care to help finish your list. Happy Studying.
